Diesen Freitag ist NINAs zweites Full-Length Studioalbum „Synthian“ erschienen. Es ist wirklich
fantastisch zu hören wie sich NINA entwickelt hat – von ihren ersten Singles zu ihrem ersten Album
„Sleepwalking“ zu „Synthian“ merkt man eine konstante Entwicklung ihres Musikalischen Stils und dessen Substanz. Während Synthian immer noch essentiell nach NINA klingt mit verträumten Melodien und ihrer engelsgleichen Stimme, ist es auch eine deutliche, beeindruckende Steigerung gegenüber ihrer vorherigen Arbeit. Es ist zudem wunderbar, die vielen “offiziellen” Kollaborationen mit LAU zu sehen, die zuvor ja bereits in NINAs Live-Setup und Songwriting eingebunden war, und selbst auch eine fantastische Musikerin ist!

Das Album kommt mit einer Vielzahl von Facetten daher. Natürlich finden sich hier die klassischen NINA Balladen wie „The Wire“, „Love is Blind“, „Unnoticed“ oder der Titeltrack „Synthian“ – der durch seine eingängige Melodie und wunderbaren Gesang wirklich heraussticht. Mit „Giving up on Us” und “Automatic Call” finden sich zudem zwei peppigere, sehr tanzbare Songs auf dem Album. Besonders der letztere beeindruckt mit einem schön treibenden Beat und macht es einem sehr schwer beim Hören still sitzenzubleiben. „Runaway“ versprüht sämtliche 80er Vibes, die man sich nur wünschen kann. Der Song hätte problemlos ein Chartstürmer damals werden können – Blondie und Kim Wilde würden vor Neid erblassen.

Da wir auch ein gutes Saxophonsolo durchaus zu schätzen, haben wir sofort ein kleinen Narren an „Never Enough“ gefressen. Würden wir am Meer leben, wäre dies einer unserer go-to Songs zum entspannen am Strand, während man zusieht wie Palmenblätter in der warmen Brise flattern.

Eine weitere Facette, die uns enorm gut gefällt ist die Rückkehr der etwas opulenteren „NINA Hymnen“. Was damals mit “One of Us” seinen Anfang nahm wurde auf dem vergangenen Album ein wenig vernachlässigt. Auf „Synthian“ fanden wir zu unserer Freude mit “The Calm Before the Storm“ und „The Distance“ zwei eindrucksvolle Vertreter. Besonders letzteres funktioniert besonders gut mit abwechselnd minimalistischen und fast orchestralen Arrangements, die eine perfekte Basis für NINAs Singstimme bilden. Können wir hiervon bitte mehr haben?

Zum Schluss bleibt zu sagen, dass „Synthian“ eine tolle Platte ist, die wir nur wärmstens empfehlen können. Besucht also eure präferierte Musikplattform, hört rein und last uns gerne wissen, was ihr zum Album denkt.

This Friday marked the release of NINA’s second full-length studio album “Synthian”. It is truly amazing to hear how NINA has developed – from the first singles, to her first album “Sleepwalking” to “Synthian” you feel a constant development of her musical style and substance. While “Synthian” is still quintessentially NINA with dreamy melodies and her angelic voice, it is also a considerable and impressive step-up from her previous work. It is also great to see the many “official” collaborations with LAU on this album, who has always been a part of NINA’s live setup and songwriting, and is a great musician herself.

The album presents us with a variety of facets. Of course, we can find typical NINA ballads like “The Wire”, “Love is Blind”, “Unnoticed” or the title track “Synthian” – that really stands out with an extremely catchy melody and wonderful lyrics. With “Giving up on Us” and “Automatic Call” we also have two more upbeat and very danceable songs on the album. Especially the latter impresses with a nice, driving beat and makes it extremely difficult to sit still while listening to it. “Runaway” gives you all the 80s vibes you could wish for. This could have well been a real chartbreaker back in the days – Blondie and Kim Wilde would be jealous.

Since we appreciate a good sax solo, we also immediately fell in love with “Never Enough”. If we would live by the sea, this would probably be one of our go-to songs for chilling and relaxing on the beach, looking at the palm leaves float in a light breeze.

Another facet we really enjoyed is the comeback of the more opulent NINA anthems. What started with “One of Us” way back has been a bit neglected on the last album. We were therefore delighted when we heard “The Calm Before the Storm” and “The Distance”, two truly impressive, opulent NINA anthems on the new album. Especially the latter work exceptionally well, shifting between minimalistic and almost orchestral arrangements that form a perfect basis for NINAs singing voice. Could we please have more of this?
