The Neon Droid – Optimized Human
Hungarian artist The Neon Droid belongs to those Synthwave artists who have been active in the scene for a long time, but somehow unfortunately still fly somewhat under the radar. This is incomprehensible, especially in the light of the technically outstanding EPs of the Sunset trilogy he delivered last.
After a break of three years he is finally back with his second long player, and you can hear that he did take advantage of the break.
“Optimized Human” is an album fabricated around a strong cyberpunk atmosphere. This already becomes obvious in the title- and opening track, which immediately pulls us into the album’s spell. We are presented with 11 fantastic songs, which could not be more diverse or complex. Even if every title has its own individual allure, we do want to point out a few truly outstanding pieces in particular.
With „Biomech Combat Suit“, the name says it all. Heavy, stomping rhythms paint the perfect pinture of a giant, slightly rusty mech as it unwieldily moves through the metropolis. Together with the arcade-like 80s sounds we here get the perfectly rounded soundtrack to our favorite robot movie – whatever it may be.
“Exile” brings the glam vibes to the album with its catchy and danceable melodies and guitar sounds.
“Wonderful Days” impresses in particular through its complexity. Starting with driving basslines, the song soon transforms with trancy keyboards and a very catchy melody that simply gets you moving – impossible to resist. In the bridge we even get some breakbeats on top of that. All these little pieces come together to create a surprisingly harmonic whole.
“Virtual Purgatory” is probably the most virtuosic piece on the album. With its very natural sounding synthesizer sound and a melody that Muse would have been envious of even during their best days, we are pulled into a completely different world yet again. The drum beats give the song a very organic feel and creates and atmosphere that is unique on the album.
Bottom line:
With its extremely diverse tonality, “Optimized Human” creates something that is larger than the sum of its parts. The songs are extremely well structured and always offer an interesting arc of suspense, transforming the listening experience into something truly special. We were often surprised how some of the songs take a complete turn.
We are not only presented with stomping basslines or standard 80s Blade Runner atmosphere. We can find everything here, from sawing, rough sounds all the way to softer tones. What we like most about the LP is its emancipation from the classical 80s sounds in favor of a mix of 80s electro/trance and arcade music. The only little caveat lies in the mastering. With a little more investment here, this album could have gone so much farther.
Nevertheless, we sincerely hope we won’t have to wait 3 entire years until the next album and hope that in the meantime you will not only check out “optimized Human”, but also the rest of Neon Droid’s fantastic discography.
Der ungarische Künstler The Neon Droid gehört zu den Synthwave Künstlern, die zwar schon lange in der Szene aktiv sind aber leider dennoch unter dem Radar laufen. Das ist fast schon unverständlich, hat er doch mit der Sunset Trilogie drei enorm abwechslungsreiche und technisch herausragende EPs abgeliefert.
Nach drei Jahren Pause meldet er sich nun endlich mit seinem zweiten Longplayer zurück, und man merkt dass er die Pause durchaus genutzt hat.
„Optimized Human“ ist als Album mit starker Cyberpunk Atmosphärik angelegt. Das wird bereits im titelgebenden Intro deutlich, dass uns direkt in den Bann des Albums zieht. Hier werden uns 11 fantastische Songs präsentiert, die diverser und vielschichtiger kaum sein könnten. Auch wenn wirklich jeder Titel seinen individuellen Reiz hat, wollen wir hier doch einige wirklich herausragende Nummern noch einmal extra hervoreben.
Bei „Biomech Combat Suit“ ist der Name Programm. Schwere, stampfende Rhythmen zeichnen das perfekte Bild eines großen, leicht angerosteten Mechs, der sich schwerfällig durch die Großstadt bewegt. Zusammen mit arcadigen 80er Melodien bekommen wir hier den perfekt abgerundeten Soundtrack zu unserem Liebslings-Roboterfilm
„Exile“ bringt mit seinen Gitarrensounds und sehr eingängigen und tanzbaren Melodien die Glam Vibes auf das Album.
„Wonderful Days“ besticht vor allem durch seine Vielschichtigkeit. Beginnen wir noch mit treibenden Bässen wandelt sich der Song sofort mit trancigen Keyboards und einer enorm eingängigen Melodie, die zum Bewegen motiviert – unmöglich hierbei ruhig sitzen zu bleiben. In der Bridge bekommen wir sogar noch Breakbeats geboten. Alle diese Versatzstücke verbinden sich zu einem überaus harmonischen Ganzen.
„Virtual Purgatory“ ist wohl das virtuoseste Stück auf der Platte. Mit seinem sehr natürlich klingenden Synthesizer Sound und einer Melodie, auf die Muse in ihren besten tagen neidisch gewesen wären, werde wir hier noch einmal in eine ganz andere Welt versetzt. Die Trommelrhythmen verleihen dem Song eine sehr organische Note und bildet eine Atmospäre, die auf dem Album einzigartig ist.
Fazit:
Mit seiner enorm vielseitigen Tonalität ist „Optimized Human“ zuletzt mehr als die Summe seiner Teile.
Die Songs sind gut strukturiert und bieten immer einen interessanten Spannungsbogen, der das Hören zum Erlebnis macht. Des Öfteren wurden wir überrascht wie sich ein Song fast schon um 180 Grad gedreht hat.
Hier gibt es nicht nur Bassgestampfe oder die Standard 80er Jahre Blade Runner Atmosphäre. Von sägenden, rauen Tönen bis hin zu sehr sanften Klängen findet man hier alles. Am besten gefällt uns das sich das Album vom klassischen 80s Sound emanzipiert, hin zu einer Mischung aus 90er Electro/Trance und Arcade Musik. Der einzige kleine Wehmutstropfen ist das Mastering. Mit ein bisschen mehr Investment könnte hier noch sehr viel mehr aus den Songs herausgeholt werden.
Wir hoffen sehr, dass wir bis zum nächsten Album nicht wieder 3 Jahre warten müssen und hoffen dass ihr euch in der Zwischenzeit nicht nur „Optimized Human“, sondern auch des Rest von Neon Droid’s fantastischer Diskographie zu Gemüte führt.
